Palmetto Bay will host the second annual “Dig Like Kim” Volleyball Tournament and fundraiser on Sunday, May 15, at Coral Reef Park’s Kimberly Latshaw Ortiz Volleyball Courts, which were dedicated formally last year.
Kimberly Latshaw Ortiz, a long-time Palmetto Bay resident, passed away in January of 2021 following a courageous, 21-month battle with pancreatic cancer. She grew up in Miami, graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1991, loved all sports and earned full volleyball scholarships to and graduated from Miami Dade College and the University of South Alabama.
She taught personal fitness, aerobics, dance and wellness as a physical education teacher at Barbara Goleman Senior High School and Palmetto Senior High School for 23 years. At Palmetto, she served as department chair for Physical Education and was nominated for Teacher of the Year. She was head volleyball coach at both schools, taking teams to district and state championships, receiving Coach of the Year awards several times.
Registration for the tournament can be done at https://diglikekim.org/.
Fanny Carmona, Parks & Recreation director for the village, had a timely message about the event.
