As part of its Earth Day celebration the Village of Palmetto Bay will host a special screening of a new documentary film by Richard S. Kern titled Currents from Cuba. The screening will take place at the Perrine Community House on Thursday, Apr. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m., with live narration by the filmmaker.
Kern, executive director of Encounters in Excellence, has presented his films to almost a half million public school students in Miami-Dade County. The Encounters in Excellence program consists of a series of film lectures on natural history topics, mainly focusing on the incredible biodiversity of Biscayne Bay, the Everglades and the surrounding environments.
His work has great personal meaning to him.
“As a natural history filmmaker who was born and raised in South Florida, I grew up hearing stories of this almost mythical place called Zapata Swamp, home to species like the Cuban crocodile and the bee hummingbird…species unique to Cuba,” Kern said. “Making this film was an opportunity to highlight endemic animals such as these, as well as some of the remaining wild areas of the island, a place that is so close yet often seems so far away.”
Currents from Cuba takes audiences on a journey from the depths of Florida’s Fakahatchee Strand to some of the wildest areas on the island of Cuba. It explores some of the many things that make Cuba unique, as well as ways in which Cuba is connected in ecological terms to South Florida and the broader region.
A four minute trailer about the film can be viewed at: www.facebook.com/OdysseyEarth/videos/1616130928405792/.
