The Village of Palmetto Bay will host the first annual coed “Dig Like Kim” volleyball tournament on Sunday, May 16, at Coral Reef Park to formally dedicate the Kimberly Latshaw Ortiz Volleyball Courts. The dedication ceremony begins at 1 p.m. but check-in for the tournament starts at 7 a.m.
Kimberly Latshaw Ortiz was a long-time Palmetto Bay resident who passed away on Jan. 30 following a courageous, 21-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
She grew up in Miami, graduated Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1991, loved all sports and earned full volleyball scholarships to and graduated from Miami Dade College and The University of South Alabama. She taught personal fitness, aerobics, dance and wellness as a PE teacher at both Barbara Goleman Senior High School and Palmetto Senior High School for 23 years.
At Palmetto, she served as department chair for Physical Education and was nominated for Teacher of the Year. She was head volleyball coach at both Goleman and Palmetto, taking teams to district and state championships, receiving Coach of the Year Awards several times. She received proclamations from the Village of Palmetto Bay for her determination to have her students achieve academic excellence, personal integrity, and respect for themselves and others.
“Dig Like Kim” Inc., is an annual volleyball scholarship fund set up to support deserving young athletes in Miami-Dade County.
The 4v4 sand volleyball tournament has a 15-year-old minimum age requirement and there is a $250 entry fee.
