Palmetto Bay’s Earth Day Art Contest, begun in March, has ended and the winner was announced.

Natalie M. Garcia, a seventh grade student at Southwood Middle School, was chosen out of all the entries because her poster “thoughtfully depicted how we must invest in our planet before it’s too late.”

Garcia received a prize and a Certificate of Appreciation presented to her and her art teachers by Village Mayor Karyn Cunningham. The school was honored with a ceremonial Japanese fern tree planting on school grounds.

“This is the seventh year that a Southwood Middle School student has won the Earth Week poster contest,” Mayor Cunningham said. “This year’s winner, Natalie Garcia, beautifully portrayed the theme of ‘Invest in Our Planet.’ Her artwork will be highlighted on our website and social media and will serve as a great tool to educate our community on the importance of caring for our environment.”

Garcia expressed her sincere gratitude to her art teachers, Ms. Gomez-Martinez and Mr. Angulo, who she says inspire her daily.

The Earth Day Art Contest allows students in middle schools, grades 6-8, the chance to express their care and concern for the planet through artwork. A theme is selected each year by the Earth Day Organization in Washington, DC. Palmetto Bay conducts the contest locally, accepting entries online. The contest was open to all Village of Palmetto Bay middle school students. The theme this year was a continuation of last year’s campaign.
