Walk to End Alzheimer’s on November 19

November is Alzheimer’s month with many events helping raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.  The biggest event, of course, is the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, November 19, at the FIU Football Stadium, 11200 SW 8th St.  Gates open at 8 a.m. and you can look for many teams already signed up including those from United HomeCare, Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Edward Jones, Ser & Associates, David Lawrence and the Rotary Club of Coral Gables, to mention a few.

Actually, the day before the event, at 11 a.m., Friday, November 18, United HomeCare and Florida Community Care are hosting an Alzheimers’s & Dementia Educational Forum and luncheon at the Intercontinental Doral moderated by Dr, h.c. Rachel Tourgeman with expert panelists; Gary Barg, Dr. Trinidad Arguelles, Gloria Orlandi-Kass, MS and Guadalupe Rodriguez, MSW_MPH, LCSW-QS. This is a wonderful event that will provide information and resources and more for those dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia and affords a great networker for business, human resources, medical and social work professional.   For information on reservations, contact 305 716 0736 bcabellos@unitedhomecare.com. 

Yet another event helping to support the Alzheimer’s Association, Coral Gables Woman’s Clubs Gringo Bingo, was held November 7, at Clutch Burger in the Gables.  The major sponsor for that event was Ser & Associates, who support this Walk big time every year. These monthly Gringo Bingo games hosted by Clutch Burger since 2019 have contributed funds to dozens of charities and the funds for December 6 Gringo Bingo will be shared to support the 2022 Jingle Bell Run to be held Saturday, December 17 at Tropical Park. Speaking of CGWC, on Friday November 18, look for them at the Annual SMARTRIDE, a 2 day 165 mile bike ride from Miami to Key West for which CGWC handles 2 pit stops annually lead by club member Carmen Suarez. Funds from this annual event, founded years ago by Glenn Weinzimmer, are directed to several HIV/Aids clinics throughout the state. 

In other news, CBS4 evening news anchor Lauren Pastrana recently emceed A Safe Haven for Newborn’s Gala  held at the Hilton Miami Downtown.  The affair featured an amazing program as well as a fabulous auction both in person and online.  Founder and CEO Nick Silverio proudly announced the organization 16 more babies were saved from abandonment and possible death since the last gala bringing to total to 366 newborns saved.  In the case of this organization, it is not just the babies that are saved.  You see, ASHFN also gives support and life changing help to all those mothers as well. Nick Silverio works 24/7 with no salary and inspires his one person staff and countless amazing Donors and Ambassadors who help support the organization with multiple fundraising events including the annual Gala, 5 K Run/Walk and a Golf Tournament. Gloria Burns
A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
