We are at the end of the summer……

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We are at the end of the summer and it’s time to get our kids back to school. After being away for quite some time, they are once again faced with the challenge of adjusting to a new norm. As coronavirus cases in the state continue to surge, I implore parents to ensure student have sufficient masks and hand sanitizers and that they practice social distancing.

Vaccine is another way of helping to curb the spread of the virus. The City of Miramar now provide easy access to both vaccination and COVID-19 testing. For easier access for each resident in Miramar and surrounding cities and to cut down on long wait times, we have 2 locations that will be open Monday to Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm.

Locations are: West Miramar: Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway, Miramar,
FL 33027

East Miramar: Lakeshore Park, 8501 S. Sherman Circle, Miramar, FL 33023

City Efforts to Address Bulk Collection Delays:

The City of Miramar, through its Solid Waste Franchise Agreement with Waste Pro of Florida, has provided for an unlimited quantity of residential curbside bulk collection services. Traditionally, this service has not experienced minimal delays due to incompletion of the daily bulk route schedule. Over the past 18 months, the volume of bulk waste placed curbside for collection has significantly increased, impacting the regularity of bulk collection services. “Stay-at-Home” orders have been lifted; however, changes in the public’s shopping habits have contributed to that increase (see photos below).

It has become increasingly evident that contractors’ generated waste such as tree debris, drywall, and fences, have played a substantial role in the increased volume of bulk materials placed curbside for collection. The increased bulk waste and frequency of contractors placing materials curbside for collection is having a direct impact on Waste Pro’s ability to complete daily bulk collection routes, resulting in collection delays. In addition to the increase in bulk garbage items, the industry is also facing a shortage of qualified workers due to the pandemic.

I know this impacts City residents and rest assured we are working to address the recurring delays and devise a plan to mitigate the situation.

I would like to take this time to reach out to each of the residents whose are from Jamaican and Indian heritage. I am so happy that you chose this city to be your home.
