Highly respected professional counseling group honors Surfside survivor and Wellspring trauma specialist Angela Gonzalez with gesture to support those impacted by the tragedy

On the morning of June 24th Wellspring Counseling was nearing the end of their week-long Bounce! Trauma Resolution Camp, an intensive, one-week program supporting children who have suffered significant trauma.

Wellspring trauma counselor Angela Gonzalez, an integral part of the program who had spent the week teaching and working with at-risk youth, did not show up for her fist session of the day.

It became apparent to the Wellspring staff it was Angela’s building that had collapsed. Shortly later the staff was notified that Angela and her daughter Deven were seriously injured in the collapse of the Champlain Towers, but had survived.

“We were all absolutely stunned and dismayed,” said Tova Kreps, co-founder and President of Wellspring. “But we had all of these kids to take care of, and I can’t say enough about our team who managed to pull it together and push on.”

“In thinking through how we can not only honor Angela and her family, but those affected by such an unspeakable tragedy,” added Kreps, “we felt that the appropriate gesture was to do what we do best – support those who have gone through a major tragedy.”

To that end, Wellspring is offering complimentary trauma counseling for victims, survivors and those impacted by the Surfside tragedy.

“Like everyone else in the community, our team initially reeled from this tragedy, especially because one of our own was directly impacted. Nevertheless, we decided that the best course of action was to practice what we preach about trauma support,” added Dr. Leigh Byers, Executive Director of Wellspring. “We know that if trauma is not properly processed, it can lead to far-reaching negative consequences in an individual’s life.  Our trauma specialists are equipped for just this type of circumstance.”

“The long-term negative consequences of trauma cannot be overstated,” concludes Kreps. “A little bit of support can go a long way, and we encourage all impacted by this tragedy, directly and indirectly, to seek mental health support.”
