William “Bill” Archer, beloved co-founder of The Big Cheese in South Miami, passed away on Feb. 21, at the age of 65.
A man with a warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering love for his community, Bill spent over four decades bringing people together through food, friendship and kindness.
In 1984, alongside his close friend and business partner, Garry Duell, Bill opened The Big Cheese. What started as a simple dream soon became a Miami institution, known for its comforting Italian dishes and welcoming atmosphere. Whether it was families sharing a meal, University of Miami fans gathering before a game, or locals just stopping by for a slice, The Big Cheese became more than a restaurant — it became a home for countless people.
But Bill’s legacy goes far beyond the food. He was a steadfast supporter of the community, always ready to lend a helping hand. From feeding student-athletes to providing meals for those in need after natural disasters, he believed in using his success to give back. His kindness was not just felt in the restaurant but throughout Miami, where he was known as a man who put people first.
Bill’s impact will never be forgotten. His laughter, generosity, and love for bringing people together will live on in the countless lives he touched. He is survived by his loving family, friends, and the many patrons who became an extension of his own family over the years.
A celebration of Bill’s life was held on Mar. 14 at Christ the King Church in Miami, where many who knew and loved him gathered toshare memories of a truly special man.
Bill will be missed deeply, but his legacy will live on in every warm slice and every act of kindness inspired by his generous heart.
