Work to reduce flooding in Cutler Bay is underway
Flooding is a problem in parts of Cutler Bay during heavy rains.

A project to reduce flooding in a part of Cutler Bay, restrict the discharge of hazardous pollutants to area canals and to improve water quality and quantity treatment began on Monday, Mar. 29, and will continue into 2022. Traffic in the area is likely to be affected.
Alfredo Quintero Jr., Public Works director for the Town of Cutler Bay, explained the scope of the project in a message sent to residents.

“The area is bounded by Montego Bay Drive to the north, Anchor Road to the west, Gulfstream Road to the east, and SW 212th Street to the south,” Quintero said. “The project will consist of drainage improvements, exfiltration trench for water quality treatment, new outfall pipe connection, roadway resurfacing, pavement markings, and site restoration. Access to local roads will be maintained during construction, however, traffic patterns in the area will be altered as the project progresses and delays will be expected.”

Called the Cutler Ridge Section 3 Resurfacing and Drainage Improvement Project, the work will be carried out in two phases:

Phase One: drainage improvement (including milling and resurfacing) to the area bound by and including Montego Bay Drive to the north, Bluewater Road to the east, Pan American Drive to the south, and Anchor Road to the west. It will take approximately 180 days to complete.

Phase Two: milling and resurfacing to the area bound by Montego Bay Drive to the north, Anchor Road to the west, Gulfstream Road to the east, and SW 212th Street to the south.

It will take approximately 60 days to complete.

Estimated cost of the project is $1,802,022, with $1,352,022 coming from the town’s People’s Transportation Fund (PTP), $200,000 from a State Appropriation Grant (FDEP), and $250,000 from the Stormwater Utility Fund.
