A world premiere composition, 2021, by 20-year-old harpist, Yuuri Harper-Rosenberg, will be one of the highlights of the Emmy and Gold Medal-winning South Florida Youth Symphony’s (SFYS.net) historic performance on May 22 at the Seminole Theatre, 18 N. Krome Ave. in Homestead.

The two free concerts, at 1 and 4 p.m., by one of the nation’s leading youth music organizations, are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Homestead-South Dade, the Rotary Club of Homestead and the office of Miami-Dade Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee.

The 1 p.m. Kids’ Concert will be oriented toward families with children and feature popular Broadway and music themes as well as instrument demonstrations, while the 4 p.m. Student Showcase Concert will feature more classical music.

The 4 p.m. performance will feature stirring solos by Harper-Rosenberg, 17-year-old Heily Rivas (String Bass) and 19-year-old lead violinist and concertmaster Gianluca Nagaro.

“This is a great opportunity for our gifted young musicians to display their talents in a magnificent venue,” said Marjorie Hahn, SFYS executive and music director.

Now in its 56th consecutive year, the SFYS has performed world-wide over the past five decades. This includes winning a Gold Medal at the Heritage Music Festival in Washington, DC (2017); performing at Carnegie Hall (2018), and capturing Gold at the Prague Young Bohemian Music Festival (2019). Once the pandemic cancelled live rehearsals, the group began practicing and rehearsing on Zoom and eventually performed four online concerts, the third of which captured a prestigious local Emmy.

“This will be the first time that many of our children — and many of our residents — have had the opportunity to hear the type of award-winning music the South Florida Youth Symphony is famous for,” said Kiwanis Lt. Governor and Homestead Councilmember Erica G. Ávila. “We think this will enrich our culture here in Homestead and inspire our children in the future.”

The SFYS program is sponsored through support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Kirk Foundation, Publix Charities, and the Nancy Friday Foundation.

Due to COVID restrictions, a limited number of tickets are available to the public at the Seminole Theatre website, https://www.seminoletheatre.org/buy-tickets-here or by calling the box office 786-650-2073, Thursday-Saturday, noon.-5 p.m.
