The YMCA of South Florida, in partnership with the City of Weston, will honor former and current military men and women during the 9th Annual Veterans Day Salute on Friday, November 10 from 9-11 a.m. at the Bonaventure Town Center Club, 16690 Saddle Club Road, in Weston.

“We welcome all military personnel and their families to join us for this heartwarming celebration,” said YMCA of South Florida President and CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “This is a special time for us to show our veterans and those on active duty our deep appreciation for all that they have done, and continue to do, for our country.”

Guests will enjoy breakfast and a presentation from this year’s keynote speaker, Captain Scott O’Grady. A decorated United States Air Force fighter pilot with more than 1,300 military flying hours, Captain O’Grady is most recognized for helping enforce the NATO no-fly zone policy over Bosnia. During the presentation, Captain O’Grady will share a gripping story of how he survived in hostile territory for six days after his F-16 was struck by a Soviet-made anti-craft missile.

“It is an honor to have Captain O’Grady with us this year, particularly because celebrating Veterans Day is a special tradition here at the Y,” Woods said. “We encourage the community to join us for this special day in supporting all who serve and have served our country.”

According to data from the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, nearly 10% of the nation’s 19.1 million veterans, live in Florida, making it the third largest veteran population in the nation. Through the YMCA’s military membership, families can spend quality time together, meet other military families and enjoy the Y’s membership offerings in a supportive environment. Military benefits include opportunities for paid employment and as volunteers, facility usage for training purposes, health and wellness seminars and cross promotions of shared resources.
