FIU was ranked No. 3 among U.S. public universities that are 50 years old or younger by Times Higher Education (THE).

The worldwide rankings list 414 of the world’s best universities that are 50 years or younger, and are based on the same performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, such as teaching, research, international outlook and their work with industry. The methodology adjusts the weight given to different performance indicators to reflect the missions of younger universities.

FIU opened its doors in 1972 with 5,667 students – the largest opening enrollment in U.S. history. Today, FIU has a student body of over 58,000 students; over 235,000 alumni; more than 200 bachelor’s master’s and doctoral programs; and more than 10,000 faculty and staff.

The university has earned numerous other top rankings including 44 current rankings in the top 50 by U.S. News & World Report including Most Innovative Schools and Top Performer on Social Mobility, FIU was also recently ranked among the top three universities in the U.S. in three categories by the THE Impact Rankings based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“FIU constantly seeks to achieve exceptional student-centered learning and upward economic mobility, produce socially impactful research and creative activities, and lead transformative innovations locally and globally,” said Provost Kenneth G. Furton. “These rankings validate that FIU has rapidly and successfully built a reputation for itself that is well beyond its age.”
