The National Art Education Association has named Miriam Machado, of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU, as the recipient of the 2023 National Museum Education Art Educator Award. This prestigious award, determined through a peer review of nominations, recognizes the exemplary contributions, service, and achievements of one outstanding NAEA member annually at the National level within their division. The award will be presented during the NAEA 2023 National Convention in San Antonio.

Machado joined the Frost Art Museum when it first opened in 2008 as a docent and volunteer program manager, where she established programming that remains today. In her current role as director of education, Machado exemplifies the Frost Art Museum’s mission to transform lives through art by committing herself to creating the most engaging and impactful educational programming possible. Of note, Machado created the Frost museum’s Steamworks program, creating opportunities for students to investigate design, engineering, and 21st-century skills needed for success while learning about public art and sculpture. She also has established a multi-visit program with a nearby Title 1 school, which has inspired students to create their own museum and realize that they can choose many career paths.

“Miriam’s work is a cornerstone for all that we do. For 15 years, she has led our education department with an unwavering dedication,” said Jordana Pomeroy, director of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU. “We are immensely proud of her well-deserved recognition by NAEA. We see her passion for art education every day and are thrilled she sets the pace for her peers across the nation.”

NAEA President James Haywood Rolling, Jr. states, “This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Miriam Machado exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession.”
