One of the most experienced hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgical oncologists in South Florida and one of the few high-volume HPB surgeons in the state who does complex vascular reconstructions, Joshua Shaw, M.D., MPA, FASC, has joined Holy Cross Medical Group, a multi-specialty physician employed group of more than 130 physicians providing services throughout Broward County.
Dr. Shaw’s focus areas include pancreatic, biliary, gallbladder, liver and adrenal cancer; malignant and benign diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, biliary tract, stomach and esophagus; neuroendocrine tumors; and sarcomas and other abdominal masses. He performs traditional open surgery, as well as robotic and laparoscopic surgeries and
employs the use of multidisciplinary teams, peer review boards and nationally recognized best practices in the treatment of cancer to achieve superior patient outcomes.
Prior to joining Holy Cross, Dr. Shaw was in a private practice. He was a core faculty member in the surgical residency programs at HCA Florida Westside Hospital
Regional / HCA Florida Northwest Hospital and Broward Health, where he was also surgical director, and transplant and HPB surgeon at Cleveland Clinic. He also founded a health IT software startup called Mozaic Medical Inc. and helped design Injury Free Coalition for Kids, a program that hosts safety education events and fairs for student groups, schools, hospitals, teams and neighborhoods in Worcester County.
A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) in Worcester where he also completed general surgery residency training, Dr. Shaw completed a comprehensive two-year surgical scholars program through the Harvard School of Public Health where he focused on improving outcomes and disparity within the delivery of healthcare. Following his residency, Dr. Shaw successfully completed a two-year fellowship program in HPB surgical oncology and abdominal transplant for adults and pediatrics at the University of Toronto, one of the largest oncology and transplant centers in the world. Dr. Shaw graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Psychology from George Washington University. He also received a Master of Public Health in the clinical effectiveness program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston,
Massachusetts.
Recognized with numerous distinctions as a top provider, surgeon and educator, Dr. Shaw received the UMMS Resident Teacher of the Year Award, American College of Surgeons Student Research Award, Truman Presidential Scholarship and National Society of Collegiate Scholars Merit Award and was a finalist in the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma Resident National Clinical Research Competition.
Dr. Shaw has been published in numerous journals and has presented at the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Winter Symposium, American Transplant Congress, Cleveland Clinic, American Liver Foundation Meeting, Broward Health, International Liver Cancer Association Annual Conference in Seoul, South Korea, International Liver Transplant Society Joint International Congress in Prague, Czech Republic, and more professional conferences throughout the United States and Canada.
Board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and accredited by the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA) and American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS), Dr. Shaw has been in practice since 2009. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has been a voting member of the National Liver Review Board. He belongs to AHPBA, ASTS, International Hepatobiliary Association, International Liver Cancer Association, American Medical Association and American College of Surgeons.
