Councilman Jimmie Williams Holds Stop the Violence Prayer Vigil

Councilman Jimmie WilliamsIn the wake of another senseless killing in Miami-Dade County over the weekend, Councilman Jimmie Williams is calling out to the Homestead/Florida City community to show unity in the face of violence at a Stop the Violence Prayer Vigil that will take place on Tuesday, August 12 from 6 to 10 pm at Blakey Park, 600 SW 14th Ave., during an annual back to school giveaway event.

A shot rang out in the evening hours of Sunday, August 3, 2014, that claimed the life of 13 year old Darrin Booker of Florida City. According to eyewitnesses and the official police report, the young boy was among a group that were playing in the driveway of a house located at 425 N.W. 13th street in Florida City, just a few blocks from he lived, when another boy, known only as “Curtis”, approached the victim with a handgun and squeezed the trigger at point blank range. The gun failed to fire until the third attempt which ultimately cost the life of young Booker.

Councilman Williams expressed his condolences to the family and said to them, “Hold your head high and look to God who is the father of our Faith for peace and understanding during this difficult time. Homestead, Florida city and Miami-Dade County, it is time for us to take a stance and really make an effort and commitment to fight against senseless violence,” continued Councilman Williams. “When a young boy can’t play in the streets of his own neighborhood safely, then we as a community, as a people, need to take a long, hard look at ourselves. I am calling on this community, members of clergy and government leadership to come together as one and show solidarity at a vigil for one of our own that has left us far too early.”
