Dreams That Cross Barriers: West Coast University

Not everyone’s nursing journey is a straight path. For West Coast University Miami alumna Stella M. (BSN ’23), her nursing story did not start in the hospital but in a courtroom.

Stella M. (BSN ’23)

Before Stella studied nursing, she was a lawyer. She went to law school in her home country of Venezuela where she completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. However, when she immigrated to the United States with her family, she had to leave her career behind. This time, she chose to pursue her childhood dreams of working in healthcare and studied nursing instead!

“I want to be an example to others that if we fight for what we want, we can do it;’ Stella said. “lf you are at West Coast University, you can do it the same way that I did.”

Part of WCU’s purpose is giving students the tools they need to pursue the career of their choosing. Like Stella, many of WCU’s students are career-changers who have always dreamed of working in healthcare.

Thanks to the hands-on education she received at WCU, Stella was not just able to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, but she also passed the nursing licensure exam (NCLEX-RN) just 11 days after completing the program!

“That’s why I can tell you West Coast University prepared me for that:’ she said about the experience.

As to how Stella intends to influence the next generation of nurses, she is already doing it. Her daughter, who also moved from Venezuela to Miami, also dreams of being a nurse. “She was the first person during my ceremony screaming and yelling, “Mom, I love you! I’m proud of you!”‘ Stella said.

To provide students the best chance of success, WCU emphasizes a student-centric approach to learning with hands-on practice and real-world preparation. Students have access to no-cost tutoring, video review materials, technologically advances simulation labs equipped with current industry technology, and more! Additionally, to support the mission of providing a quality education for all, students can choose between three program paces, including an Evening & Weekend pace designed for working students.

WCU offers career-placement assistance but cannot guarantee employment.
