Patient Ivan entered the hospital January 2021 after being diagnosed with COVID-19, which left him in critical condition with various underlying conditions.
Ivan was intubated and bed ridden for one month and then transferred to a regular room to continue his recovery. He was able to overcome all these obstacles through his faith in God and with the support of his wife, children, and three grandkids.
He was transferred to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Miami in Cutler Bay in order to begin skilled intensive rehabilitation which included occupational and physical therapy.
Ivan was dependent on medical assistance for all daily living tasks. He had fluctuations in blood pressure and new onset dialysis, which affected his recovery including his therapy sessions. Ivan was noted with a significant decline in function. He was recovering from COVID-19 with a new onset of acute kidney injury, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, and acute respiratory failure.
When Ivan arrived at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Miami, he required assistance with all self-care and mobility. Over the next couple of weeks, Ivan began to regain endurance, activity tolerance and overall muscle strength. This allowed him to perform normal daily activities, such as dressing, bathing, toileting, and walking with a rolling walker.
Ivan was able to maintain a positive attitude throughout his stay and believed that his hard work would pay off. Even when he was not in his scheduled therapy session, he was completing his exercises in his room.
Ivan stated, “It’s hard work, but you have to put more effort into it in order to make it work.”
His determination has shown that anything is possible as long as you have the patience.
