The nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals of SEIU 1991 at Jackson Heath were honored recently by Miami-Dade County Commission chair Jose “Pepe” Diaz at the Mar. 2 commission meeting. Diaz declared March 2021 “Health Heroes Month” and recognized the tremendous sacrifice made by Miami-Dade healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the extraordinary dedication of our healthcare providers, who have been on the frontlines of our efforts against the virus and have consistently gone above and beyond for the sake of the entire community’s health and wellbeing,” Diaz said. “They are amazing heroes in every sense of the word.”
“We are incredibly humbled by Chairman Diaz’s proclamation today and are proud that we live in a county where our elected leaders appreciate, trust, and support our healthcare heroes,” said Martha Baker, RN, president/executive director of SEIU 1991. “The past year has been an incredible challenge for our teams at Jackson and we continue to plead with residents to take the steps needed to keep our community safe. That includes pushing for everyone who can to take the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Thank you to Chairman Diaz, every county commissioner, and Jackson president and CEO Carlos Migoya for your continued support of healthcare heroes,” Baker added.
“We are always proud of the noble work done by our healthcare heroes at Jackson, but what our doctors, nurses, and other frontline caregivers have done over the past year during the pandemic is worthy of the highest praise,” said Carlos A. Migoya, president and CEO of Jackson Health System. “The resilience, compassion, and dedication they have shown every patient, day after day, night after night, is extraordinary – and they continue to stand up to COVID-19 despite incredible challenges. The recognition of March as Health Heroes Month is so well deserved, as our community owes an incredible amount of gratitude to every healthcare worker for their selfless contributions to improving the health and safety of the residents of Miami-Dade County.”
Several SEIU 1991 members attended the ceremony to represent the thousands of Jackson Hospital System’s nurses, doctors, and healthcare professionals.
