Keep Your Pets Cool & Safe This Summer

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the temperature rises during the summer months, it’s important to ensure that our furry companions stay cool, comfortable and safe. The summer season can pose unique challenges for pets, from heat-related illnesses to outdoor hazards.

Just like humans, pets need plenty of fresh, clean water to stay hydrated in hot weather. Make sure to provide multiple water bowls around your home and refill them regularly. Consider adding ice cubes to their water to keep it cool and refreshing.

Create shaded areas in your yard where your pets can retreat from the sun. Set up a canopy, use umbrellas, or plant trees strategically to provide natural shade. Ensure that outdoor enclosures like kennels or doghouses are well-ventilated and shaded throughout the day.

Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day, typically between late morning and early evening. Instead, schedule walks and playtime during cooler morning or evening hours. Keep outdoor activities brief and monitor your pet for signs of overheating.

Pets with short hair or light-colored fur are susceptible to sunburn. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas, such as the tips of the ears, nose and belly. Choose a sunscreen specifically formulated for pets to avoid potential toxicity from human products.

Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, even for a few minutes. On a hot day, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly soar to dangerous levels, leading to heatstroke and even death. If you need to run errands, leave your pet at home.

Sidewalks, asphalt and sand can become scorching hot during summer days, causing burns to your pet’s paw pads. Walk your pet on grass or shaded paths, and consider using booties to protect their paws during walks.

On extremely hot days, keep pets indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Provide indoor enrichment activities such as puzzle toys, interactive games, or hide-and-seek with treats to keep them mentally stimulated and entertained.

Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke, which can be life-threatening. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, lethargy, vomiting and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, offer water and seek immediate veterinary care.

Summer months often bring an increase in pests like fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Protect your pets from parasites by using vet-recommended preventive treatments. Check your pet regularly for ticks and remove them promptly to prevent disease transmission.

Include your pet in summer activities that are safe and enjoyable. Consider visiting pet-friendly beaches, hosting backyard playdates with other pets or exploring shaded hiking trails together.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your pets stay cool, comfortable, and healthy throughout the summer season.

Remember, if you have any concerns about your pet’s health or behavior during the summer months, consult your veterinarian for personalized advice and recommendations. Here’s to a safe and enjoyable summer for you and your beloved pets!
