The MRI Scanner: Yesterday and Today

Raymond V. Damadian, M.D. The Father of MRI (1936-2022)

MRI scans have become an everyday part of the practice of medicine in the United States. MRI technology uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to quickly and non-invasively examine human anatomy. The different tissues of the body respond differently to the MRI environment, and the varying strengths of radio signals detected from the body tissue are reconstructed into images of the anatomy to diagnose a wide range of maladies from something as simple as a strained muscle to more serious concerns, such as a cancerous tumor. The now widely-available technology has changed the practice of medicine in untold ways: diagnosing injuries quickly and detecting disease before it spreads, thereby saving, extending and improving the quality of millions of lives.

World’s First MRI Patent

This remarkable advancement in medicine in the last half-century is due to the revolutionary vision of Raymond V. Damadian, MD. In 1969, Dr. Damadian, while a professor at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, discovered that when in the presence of a strong magnetic field, normal tissue and cancerous tissue, as well as different types of tissue, respond differently when targeted by radio waves. This seminal discovery is the lynchpin of every single MRI image made in the practice of medicine around the world today. Dr. Damadian envisioned a machine that could non-invasively detect these differences in patients in real time. His idea was patented in 1974 as the world’s first MRI patent. Today there are close to 5,000 patents in MRI.

Dr. Damadian was determined to transform his radical idea into reality. In 1976, he and two post-graduate students began building the world’s first MRI whole-body human scanner. One year later, on July 3, 1977, their invention, named Indomitable, produced the world’s first human MRI scan. Dr. Damadian then left academia and formed FONAR Corporation, the world’s first MRI company, which produced and sold the world’s
first commercial MRI scanner in 1980.

FONAR has stayed ahead of the MRI industry by developing the Multi-Position™ UPRIGHT® MRI, also known as the STAND-UP® MRI, which allows patients to be scanned with nothing blocking their vision, allowing claustrophobic patients to be scanned more comfortably (see front cover). Patients are typically able to sit comfortably and watch TV during the exams. This MRI design also allows for weight-bearing exams, which can detect the source of back problems often missed by lie-down-only MRI scanners.

These STAND-UP® MRI scanners are available throughout Florida at locations managed by FONAR’s subsidiary, Health Management Company of America (HMCA). In South Florida, HMCA manages: Stand-Up MRI of Miami, Stand-Up MRI of Ft. Lauderdale, Stand-Up MRI and 3T Imaging (Pembroke Pines) R. and Stand-Up MRI of Boca Raton. Visit www.standupmrilocations.com to find the location nearest you.

Dr. Damadian’s MRI spurred advancement in the MRI field leading to today’s most advanced 3.0 Tesla high-field scanners, also available alongside STAND-UP® MRI scanners at HMCA-managed locations. These super-fast advanced scanners allow for the detection of millimeter-sized pathology throughout the body. This best-of-both-worlds approach gives your doctor the ability to choose the MRI system that will best suit your diagnostic needs.

In 2023, HMCA delivered the next advancement in MRI with the addition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) software on its STAND-UP® MRI scanners. This latest step in the fulfillment of Dr. Damadian’s vision enhances the quality of MRI images and allows for the reduction of scan times by up to 50% on STAND-UP® MRI systems, benefiting both patients and physicians.

First MRI Scan – Human Chest

When Dr. Damadian envisioned the possibilities of MRI a half-century ago, he foresaw a future where patients could be diagnosed quickly and non-invasively, leading to early treatment and saved lives. Today, FONAR and HMCA are employing the most modern technological advancements in MRI to further Dr. Damadian’s vision.

Ask your doctor about being referred to STAND-UP® MRI for your diagnostic needs. We’re ready to help you achieve health and wellness in a comfortable environment.
