A couple weeks ago we declared our opposition to Amendment 3, the property tax measure on Florida’s November 2026 ballot. Since then, there has been a development, and we want to make sure you have the full picture.
A Leon County court reviewed the amendment’s ballot title and summary and found them misleading, ordering the state to rewrite them. Recently, the Attorney General released the revised language.
The wording on the ballot has changed, the amendment itself has not, and neither has our position.
The new language does not change what Amendment 3 would mean for our communities. State economists project the measure would drain roughly $5 billion from local budgets in its first year and nearly $12 billion a year by 2031. This is the funding that supports public safety, road repairs, our libraries and parks, water protection, and the community planning Florida needs to manage its rapid growth.
The promised tax relief would be limited and unevenly shared, impacting less affluent and rural areas hardest, as well as communities with full-time homesteaded residents. Our concerns are with the substance of this measure, which remains unchanged.
We believe that reform of this magnitude belongs in a careful, deliberative process — the kind the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission is scheduled to undertake when it convenes in 2027.
