Two students from Kendall area high schools earned recognition recently at the third annual SUNY Oswego (NY) GENIUS Olympiad competition for environmental science, art, writing and design.
The students, with their award in parentheses, included:
Aditya Shetty of Archimedean Upper Conservatory for a project titled “Using Microbial Source Tracking to Assess Impacts of Seaweed Debris on Beach and Water Quality” in the science category (a gold medal), and
Ashwin Bhat of John A. Ferguson High School for a project titled “The Issues Faced” in the creative writing category (a silver medal).
From June 17 to 20, SUNY Oswego hosted 330 young competitors and 186 of their mentors from 44 countries and 30 states — all finalists in a worldwide competition that attracted nearly 1,000 participants from 57 nations and 37 states.
Entries in the scholarly competition spanned environmental quality, ecology and biodiversity, resources and energy, and human ecology.
With sponsorship of SUNY Oswego, Terra Science and Education Foundation, National Grid, SRC Inc., Pathfinder Bank, Destiny USA, C&S Companies and Ricoh, GENIUS honorees took home prizes as well as certificates and medals. They also attended opening and closing ceremonies, a symposium on learning and an international cultural fair at the college’s Campus Center, and made a day trip to Niagara Falls and Syracuse’s Destiny USA before departing June 21 for a trip to Washington, DC.
