2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 AWD delivers the future of driving

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Hyundai has put together one of the best-looking vehicles I’ve had the opportunity to drive.

We don’t have flying cars yet, but the $51,100 2022 IONIQ 5 AWD looks like it’s right out of “Back to the Future.”

It is all silver on the outside and looks like NASA engineers were behind its design. Even the tires look like you are rocketing through space.

The all-electric vehicle offers 303 miles on a full charge. Now you get two years of unlimited 30-minute complimentary charging sessions when you purchase the 2022 IONIQ 5.

The trims run from the $44,000 SE to the $51,100 Limited, which is the top of the line and the version test drove. The 2022 IONIQ 5 AWD dual motor is connected to an electric powertrain that delivers 320 horsepower. It feels powerful and gives you confidence behind the wheel whether you are going across town or across the state.

On the inside of the SUV, you get the full-future experience with a premium heads-up display that features augmented reality. That allows you to see key information such as navigation and even music without taking your eyes off the road. The technology extends all around the SUV, giving you a camera feed that offers a 360-degree bird’s-eye view.

Even the wipers have tech — they automatically turn on and off depending on whether it is raining.

I like that the skyroof spans the entire ceiling of the cabin without a beam going across.

That means you can get a great view of the sky and the stars without any kind of interruption.

The center console can slide over five inches, offering you a large amount of storage and a fast wireless device charger and USB ports. Under the rear seats is a standard 120-volt outlet that can supply up to 1.9 kilowatt of power for laptops and other electronics.

The rear passengers also get the advantage of rear side-window sunshades to shield them from the sunlight.

The remote smart parking assist enables the Hyundai to park itself even when you are not inside the vehicle. It can back into and pull out of a parking space with a push of your Smart Key button, which is like having an invisible valet. That is pretty amazing.

All in all, I really like the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 AWD. It fuels my hope that the future of driving is electric.
