After three years of watching electric vehicles multiply like cafecitos on Calle Ocho, I’ve been waiting for something different to shake up things. The refreshed 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 might just be that game changer that understands Miami better than most cars twice its price.
The Ioniq 5’s angular, pixelated design language is like nothing else on the road.
Those geometric LED light strips aren’t just for show. This SUV has a distinctly futuristic presence that feels right at home against Miami’s Art Deco backdrop. When you are stuck in traffic on I-95, at least you are doing it in style.
The refreshed 2025 model adds subtle but meaningful updates, including a rear windshield wiper. Might seem like a small thing, but anyone caught in a summer downpour can appreciate being able to see out the back window.
The base SE model starts at $44,000 with 168 horsepower and a range of 245 miles, but the sweet spot is the SEL with its 225-horsepower rear-drive setup for around $51,000 that delivers a range of 318 miles.
The 2025 model’s upgraded 84-kWh battery delivers up to 318 miles of range on the rear-wheel-drive models, which translates to real-world peace of mind. That is enough to get you from Miami to Orlando and part way back without a problem even with the air conditioner cranked.
The Ioniq 5 can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in as few as 18 minutes on a 350-kW fast charger, faster than you can get a cortadito at your favorite ventanita. More importantly for Miami drivers, the 2025 model now comes standard with a NACS charging port, giving you access to Tesla’s Supercharger network, while still including a CCS adapter for other charging stations. That is crucial here, where charging infrastructure is still playing catch-up with demand.
The Ioniq 5’s spacious interior is fantastic. The flat floor design means your passengers won’t be fighting for legroom during those inevitable beach runs, and there is genuinely comfortable seating for taller passengers.
The cargo space, while not enormous, offers plenty of space for beach chairs and coolers without complaint. More importantly, the seats fold completely flat, creating a surprisingly useful cargo bay for those Home Depot runs that are part of many weekends.
The 2025 model gets an updated infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The dual 12.3-inch screens are clear and responsive, even when the Florida sun is doing its best to wash them out.
The Ioniq 5 is the electric SUV for Miami drivers who want something different. It is stylish, practical, and built for our unique blend of urban sophistication and subtropical practicality.
