A Steampunk Cinderella Is Brought to life by FIU Music Students

Cendrillon
Cendrillon

Students from the FIU Opera Theater will present a rare performance of Jules Massenet’s fairy tale opera Cendrillon (“Cinderella”) on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5 at 7:30PM in the Concert Hall of the Wertheim Performing Arts Center located at 10910 SW 17 Street, Miami, FL 33199. The opera tells the story of the traditional and popular fairy tale in a non-traditional way. Through production design that features a visual class of cultures, this Cinderella story is told through the high-fashion world of steampunk, in conflict with the supernatural world of fairy tales. Steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction, involves an era where steam power is widely used and incorporates prominent elements of science fiction or fantasy in costume and set design. The student constructed costumes and scenery in this production will bring audiences a never-seen-before, dark and edgy, yet magical Cinderella story.

The production’s leading roles of Cinderella and Prince Charming are portrayed by Marian Lobaina and Scott Tripp, both graduate students in the Division of Vocal Studies at the FIU School of Music. The production will be staged by Professor Robert B. Dundas, Director of the FIU Opera Theater, with musical direction by Robert Chumbley, and set design by Jeff Quinn. The performance will take place in its original French language with English supertitles—a first for FIU Opera Theatre!
