The Gold Medal and Emmy Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS), one of the country’s leading youth music organizations, continues to reap accolades in its 57th season.

The SFYS, which has performed worldwide during the past five decades — including a recent performance at Carnegie Hall in New York — has been the subject of increased media coverage.

First, Marjorie Hahn, SFYS’ executive and music director, was selected as the winner of the Arts and Entertainment category in Miami-Dade County’s prestigious 33rd annual “In the Company of Women” Awards and received extensive media coverage for the honor.

Following that exposure, the South Florida Youth Symphony was featured on WSVN-TV’s “7 Spotlight.” The story recounted the history of the SFYS, the wide variety of performance locales of the group just this year alone, and the SFYS’ famous music training methods. Over the past five decades more than 5,000 children — most from underserved areas of Miami-Dade County — have gone through the SFYS training program.

“The Channel 7 piece was fantastic and provided tremendous exposure for our program, teachers and the kids,” Hahn said. “We’ve received quite a response after the Channel 7 piece from parents interested in having their children become part of our program.”
