Following the success of its first full year in operation which put dozens of teachers in classrooms across Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Achieve Miami’s Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP) — a Miami-based non-profit that recruits, trains, places, and mentors aspiring teachers — is launching its inaugural Fall 2024 semester course with registration now open for classes beginning on Aug. 26 at Miami-Dade College (MDC) and Florida International University (FIU).

The growth of TAP comes as classrooms in Florida and across the U.S. contend with a chronic talent shortage that has left hundreds of thousands of students without a full-time teacher. TAP addresses the critical issue of teacher shortages by developing a consistent pipeline of qualified educators, helping to bridge the gap between the demand for quality teachers and the supply of qualified individuals.

“We are thrilled to announce the remarkable growth of our TAP program in just its second year. The overwhelming response, evidenced by triple the number of students enrolled this Spring compared to last year, speaks volumes about the demand for accessible pathways into the teaching profession,” said Jasmine Calin-Micek, senior director of the Teacher Accelerator Program.

“In light of this success, we are excited to expand our course offerings and open enrollment for the upcoming Fall semester. This expansion not only underscores the program’s effectiveness but also our commitment to meeting the needs of aspiring educators and enriching the landscape of education,” Calin-Micek added.

TAP facilitates a comprehensive, streamlined program to equip both college students and individuals with a bachelor’s with the skills, knowledge, and certification necessary to excel in the classroom. Participants take a one-semester course, followed by a six-week paid summer internship, earn a certificate to teach, and begin instructing in a Miami-Dade County Public School classroom.
