Women in Music is the theme of this year’s 15th annual Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Summer Arts Camp at the Roxcy O’Neal Bolton Women’s History Gallery at The Women’s Park, and its goal is to help girls delve into the mystical, mysterious, and memorable role women have played in writing South Florida’s music.

“The GEM Summer Arts Camp program is an incredible opportunity for girls to explore their creativity and make their voices heard,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “The Women’s Park, the nation’s first park dedicated to women, serves as the perfect venue to empower these young girls to face challenges and pursue their dreams, contributing to the betterment of our community.”

Every year, the award-winning six-week summer Girls Empowerment and Mentoring (GEM) program provides girls ages 6-14 with quality art experiences and opportunities to voice their thoughts and feelings, empowering them to face challenges and pursue their dreams.

Directed by visiting professional artists and educators, it features a nourishing, multicultural group setting and an array of workshops in visual, performance and language arts (dance, musical theater, chorus, painting, arts and crafts, journalism, women’s studies, environmental science, and leadership development). The program culminates with a “Summer Arts Showcase” performance and “The Festival of the Arts” art exhibition by GEM girls at the park’s gallery.

Created by Miami-Dade Parks in 1992, The Women’s Park is the nation’s first park dedicated to females, and its space facilitates GEM’s mission of creating a better, more resilient future for our diverse multi-cultural community.

The GEM Summer Arts Camp will take place from June 17 to July 26. Registration is underway and space is limited. The cost to register is $15. The weekly camp fee is $100. Lunch and one snack are included.

The camp will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early drop-off and sign-in will be between 8 and 9 a.m., and late pickup and sign-out will be from 4 to 5 p.m.
