Alper JCC Miami, an organization with a mission to provide a source of enrichment, inspiration, education and recreation to South Miami-Dade County, held a dedication and groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 10, to commemorate the construction of Herschel’s Splash Island.
Herschel’s Splash Island is an extensive, accessible splash pad and pool renovation project conceived in honor and loving memory of Herschel Rosenthal. The project includes a complete resurfacing of the pool and pool deck areas along with the construction of an interactive splash pad for children.
Rosenthal was a committed visionary and leader of the South Florida Jewish community. He served as president of Beth David Congregation, Miami’s oldest synagogue and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, now known as the Alper JCC, in addition to supporting multiple charitable causes including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
“Building community was one of my father’s passions and we are so excited to see a community project like Herschel’s Splash Island finally becoming a reality,” said Gail Appelrouth, one of Rosenthal’s children who helped envision the project. “What a fitting way to carry on my father’s legacy than combining two of his favorite things — water and the Alper JCC.”
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava was in attendance and provided remarks, in addition to Jacob Solomon, president of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
“The Aquatics Center project, including Herschel’s Splash Island, is the first of many improvements designed to foster a welcoming, inviting environment for Alper JCC family members to be proud of and enjoy,” said Irene Tzanani, CEO of Alper JCC Miami. “We have been working tirelessly to reimagine our programs and facilities in order to better serve our community both now and in the future, and are thrilled to begin this special construction project.”
The project is slated to be completed in late spring 2024.
