Restaurateur and cancer survivor Jeff Bud was honored on Oct.16 by Miami-Dade County School Board chair and District 6 Representative Mari Tere Rojas. Bud is a 2006 graduate of Coral Gables Senior High School.

Bud, founder of the wildly popular Apocalypse BBQ located at the Killian Greens Golf Course at 9980 SW 104 St., was recognized at the school board meeting with a resolution honoring his determination, community service and passion for good food.

“It’s quite an honor to be singled out by the Miami-Dade County School Board for doing something that I love,” Bud said. “After graduating from Gables High, I worked in marketing while fighting leukemia, which I ultimately beat. Then the pandemic came along and I began to rethink my career path. I said to myself one day ‘I’m so tired of this apocalypse…I’m going to start making and selling barbecue.’”

For years, Bud’s relatives, friends and neighbors had raved about his mouthwatering and tender barbecued ribs, so in 2020 he launched Apocalypse BBQ. Today, it’s considered by many to be Miami’s top barbecue joint.

“I taught myself to cook by buying a 22-inch Weber Smokey Mountain smoker and experimenting,” he said. “I think what makes our barbecue so special is the Miami-inspired ingredients and flavors I use. For example, we add cafecito to the ribs and mojo in the mustard sauce.”

Bud acknowledges that without the support of his family, Apocalypse might never have gotten off the ground.

“My wife is a nurse and despite being incredibly busy during the pandemic, she created our cornbread recipe and helped in a million other ways. Her mother, a Miami-Dade County school teacher, has also spent time helping in the Apocalypse kitchen and serving customers,” Bud said.

Beyond serving some of the best food in Miami, Apocalypse BBQ is unlike most restaurants in other ways. They don’t have a phone number, for example, and customers are free to contact them by Instagram. There is no takeout; Bud believes the only way to enjoy his food is to enjoy it fresh and hot in the restaurant’s vibrant atmosphere. Also, patience is rewarded. While customers wait for their order, Apocalypse offers free beer and refreshments.

On Bud’s mind for the future is the upcoming launch of Lala’s, a gourmet burger and fries restaurant planned for the Glenvar Heights section of Miami. In fact, every Tuesday, Apocalypse BBQ becomes Lala’s.

“When you step into Apocalypse BBQ, you’re stepping into a realm of pure culinary indulgence,” Bud said. “We’re not just a restaurant; we’re a destination for barbecue enthusiasts seeking a memorable experience.”

Apocalypse BBQ is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.apocalypsebbq.com.
