ArtSouth and the Village of Palmetto Bay resume their popular series of exhibitions showcasing local artists on Sept, 9 at Perrine Community House with an opening art reception featuring the photographic work of Joan Miller. The reception takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Miller has visited Africa, India, Mongolia and other far-flung places around the globe, and her photographs are visually stunning images that are more art than journalism with portraits and group photos depicting different peoples and their cultures.
Joan Miller began her full-time freelance photography work after retiring from a career in medicine. She was raised and educated in Miami.
“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a camera,” Miller says on her website. “Travel, documenting rituals, rites of passage and portraits from all over the world has been my focus.
“I probably inherited the traveler and wanderer gene from my pilot father who had traveled around the world several times in his short life. Travel has given me the opportunity to learn about the world. I’m curious about other cultures, traditions and their challenges.
Most of the places I’ve been traveling are very challenging.”
At the end of her first trip to Ethiopia she developed a life-threatening health problem and had to be flown by air ambulance to the American Hospital in Paris. She was put on life support and her family was notified that her chances were slim. After three months recovering from toxic shock most likely caused by an infected insect bite, she survived and continued to pursue her passion for travel photography.
