Wings Over Miami continues to celebrate historic aviation flights and flyers with the visit of the Tuskegee Airmen traveling exhibit and the visit of the Texas Raiders’ B-17 Flying Fortress, Mar. 24-27, at Miami Executive Airport in West Kendall.
Last year, the Tuskegee Airmen traveling exhibit visited Wings, sharing the story of America’s first African-American aviators with hundreds of children. This year, the exhibit returns with a B-17 bomber, completing the story of the achievements by America’s Tuskegee Airmen pilots of World War II.
“The Tuskegee flyers were one of the most successful outfits escorting bombers going to Europe in WWII, so their story is incredibly important to the outcome of the war,” said Todd Silverman, 90, a World War II veteran.
A museum volunteer, Silverman plans to appear during the event to interact with visitors and share copies of the Constitution.
“It was great to fly in the B-17 when it last visited, particularly since it was one of the most important bombers we had in WWII. Those planes that flew over Europe were a great combat asset for the Allies,” Silverman added.
The B-17 Flying Fortress will be displayed on the tarmac, offering tours and the opportunity to purchase a flight aboard the historic aircraft. Through sponsor donations, tours of the bomber are discounted, said Suze Rice, president of Wings.
Program information is available at the museum’s Facebook page, www.Facebook.com/wingsovermiami. Reservations for the 25- to 30-minute flights can be made in advance by calling 855-FLY-A-B17 or visiting www.TexasRaiders.org.
The Wings Over Miami aviation museum, open Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is located at 14710 SW 128 St., off the SW 137th Avenue entrance to the airport.
