Bank of America recently announced four Miami high school juniors and seniors were selected as Student Leaders® (#BofAStudentLeaders), an eight-week paid summer internship connecting students to employment, skills development and community service. The students will gain practical work and leadership experience and receive financial education coaching from Bank of America’s Better Money Habits curriculum, while working alongside local nonprofit YMCA of South Florida.
This is the 20th year Bank of America has offered this competitive paid internship program in Miami, with 100 high school students selected as Student Leaders since the program began in 2004.
“By providing career and leadership development opportunities for teens for 20 years, we continue to help develop the next generation of skilled workers, which is essential to the region’s long-term economic growth,” said Gene Schaefer, president, Bank of America Miami. “These exceptional teens selected for the Student Leaders program will not only gain practical work and life experience, but the community in turn will gain help from local nonprofits and a diverse pipeline of talent as these young adults enter the local workforce.”
The class of 2024 Miami Bank of America Student Leaders are below:
- Nicolas Castillo is a student at the Maritime Academy of Science and Technology (MAST). He regularly volunteers in the Dominican Republic through BLUE Missions to help underserved communities receive potable water and sanitary latrines. His time with the nonprofit has been an eye-opening experience that’s inspired him to continue volunteering with and growing this important organization.
- Alejandro Paez-Sansonetti is a recent graduate of Coral Reef Senior High School. His passion extends to both science and people. As the co-founder of his school’s National Technical Honor Society, he helped create an antenna that collects solar flare data that is sent to NASA for further research. Alejandro also founded his school’s Rock/Guitar Club, where he has organized lessons for over 80 players, and he helped lead his high school football team to their first district championship in over 20 years.
- Mikaella Robaina is a junior at Miami Arts Studio (MAS). She has seen a decline in reading comprehension in younger grades. Using her experience as a student journalist, Mikaella organized a community service project to teach students the basics of broadcast journalism as a way of helping them become better writers and readers through consuming and writing media. She also discovered a passion for helping children through her work in MAS Respect, a club dedicated to educating and spreading awareness about children and individuals with learning disabilities.
- Rocio Pena is a Doral Academy Preparatory Charter High School junior who has been guided by her goal of empowering individuals both personally and academically. A Venezuelan immigrant, she recently led her school’s Spanish Honor Society in a book drive for her home country, since she understands the value of education for developing well-rounded individuals. She has also volunteered with Box of Joy, which provides Christmas gifts to children in over 30 impoverished countries.
- Sabrina Jean is a recent graduate of North Miami Beach Senior High School. Her commitment to community service helped her lead and rebuild her school’s Key Club during the pandemic. Through Sabrina’s efforts, they were able to recruit more students and ensure they could continue projects like food and toy drives, cleaning up parks and beaches and creating cards for children in hospitals.
In late July, Student Leaders from across the country traveled to Washington, D.C. for a week-long, all-expenses-paid, national leadership summit to learn how nonprofits, governments and businesses collaborate to meet local needs.
