A special award honoring a community security guard gained special attention at the Aug. 25 meeting of the Miami-Dade Police Hammocks District Citizen’s Advisory Committee (CAC).

Pedro Cedeño, employed by Delta Five Security, was presented with a Miami- Dade Police D e p a r t m e n t “Certificate of Appreciation” for his outstanding work in apprehending an attacker on Apr. 2.

Patrolling the Banyan Tree apartment complex that day, Cedeño heard cries for help from a woman at a trash site where he saw a male subject fleeing to reach a parked car.

According to the citation, Cedeño pursued and caught the individual, detaining him until detectives arrived to interview both victim and assailant who later confessed to five additional sexually oriented attacks in the Hammocks area.

“Thanks to your efforts, a unknown number of women will be saved from these unwarranted and scary actions,” MDPD Chief James K. Loftus said in the citation.

“You and your employer can be justifiably proud of your accomplishment.”

Maj. Alexander D. Casas, district commander, said, “His arrest and subsequent charges removed a threat that has been a troubling source for women in the Hammocks community. Arrests of this nature, particularly ‘in the act’ are very difficult to achieve.”

To show its appreciation, Delta Five presented Cedeño with a cash bonus and salary boost concurrent with the special award, all to the applause of CAC members.
