Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Miami has announced the appointment of three dynamic leaders to key positions within the organization, reinforcing a commitment to empowering youth through mentorship across Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys. The new leadership team includes Rebekah Lanae Lengel as chief operating officer (COO), Asim Pleas as vice president of programs, and Jerry Calvert as senior program director.
“We are thrilled to welcome Rebekah, Asim, and Jerry to our executive leadership team,” said Gale Nelson, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami. “Each brings a unique set of skills and experiences that will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of our programs. We are confident that, under their guidance, we will continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of the youth we serve across Miami and the Keys.”
Rebekah Lanae Lengel, a Miami native, brings more than two decades of experience in strategic innovation and change management within the South Florida nonprofit sector. As a seasoned professional with a background in youth development and artistic production, Lengel has supported the development of artists across the globe, showcasing her expertise today through her posts on the Community Advisory Board for WPBT (South Florida PBS) and the board of directors of Voices United and Rosie Herrera Dance Theater.
Throughout her career, Lengel has held influential roles at distinguished organizations, such as Miami Light Project, Barry University, and YoungArts, positioning her well to evoke impactful change within the BBBS of Miami organization.
“I am honored to join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, supporting the mission to ignite the potential of our community’s youth,” Lengel said. “I look forward to collaborating with the dedicated BBBS team to deepen and grow our ability to create meaningful mentorship opportunities that nurture positive growth and development in South Florida.”
Asim Pleas, a native of Youngstown, OH, has excelled in education and community engagement throughout his career. Pleas holds an impressive track record, having worked in mental health and special education, and later directing The Education Effect, a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools designed to increase positive pathways for students.
He is a board member at Power U, a non-profit organization working to strengthen communities through civic engagement. Pleas’ role as vice president of programs will contribute significantly to the strategic development and enhancement of mentorship initiatives.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami uniquely understands the profound effects of mentorship and that it’s not just about individual guidance, but about fostering relationships that stem from the community,” Pleas said. “I look forward to leveraging my passion and experience to enhance our programs, ensuring that we continue to make a positive impact on the lives of the youth we serve and the community as a whole.”
Jerry Calvert, a seasoned youth worker with over 13 years of experience, brings an extensive background in youth development and education, encompassing significant roles at City Year Miami and The Children’s Trust. Most recently, he led program and capacity building at the Carrie Meek Foundation. This role underlines Calvert’s commitment to empowering communities and aligns seamlessly with BBBS of Miami’s mission to create positive and enduring mentorship relationships.
“I am excited to continue my journey in youth development at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, aiming to bring about positive change by creating opportunities to foster profound relationships between Bigs and Littles, mentors and mentees,” Calvert said. “I look forward to contributing to the ongoing success of our programs and creating lasting mentorship experiences for the youth in our community.”
