Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, the premier nonprofit mentoring organization in South Florida, recently announced that Big Brother Hugo Mantilla was named the 2019 “Big Brother of the Year” by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America at its National Awards Gala on June 27 in North Carolina.
Mantilla was one of two volunteers chosen from nearly 150,000 Bigs nationwide as the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year.
Almost 10 years ago, Mantilla, executive director, Wealth Management, institutional consulting director at Morgan Stanley, became a mentor to Little Brother Luis in the community-based mentoring program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami.
Together, the two have formed a close bond that continues to grow.
“We nominated Hugo as our agency representative because he embodies what we strive to do as an organization,” said Gale Nelson, CEO of Big Brother Big Sisters of Miami. “After years of monetary donations, Hugo realized that he could give so much more by creating a lasting impact in a young man’s life as a true role model and friend to Luis.”
Luis will continue into the Graduate Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, allowing him and Mantilla to be formally matched through Luis’ young adulthood. Following in his Big’s footsteps, Luis is currently a sophomore in college studying finance, with plans to become a broker.
“These two Bigs have had extraordinary impact in the lives of their Littles,:” said Pam Iorio, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. “They represent how Bigs inspire Littles to reach their full potential.”
Mantilla also was named the 2019 Florida Big Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Florida.
