Miami-Dade County School Board member Mary Blanco proffered at the board meeting of Jan. 14 agenda item H-10, requesting that the superintendent of schools endorse the Live Like Bella Foundation Superhero 5K on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Tropical Park.

The Live Like Bella Foundation, founded in 2013 by the parents of Bella Rodriguez-Torres, who died of pediatric cancer at age 10, supports children and families affected by childhood cancer. Donations fund research, in-treatment assistance, and memorial support. Since its founding, the foundation has provided over $6.5 million in family assistance, allocated $37 million for lifesaving research, and supported 66 clinical trials.

“Live Like Bella,” a phrase coined by Bella’s parents, reflects a commitment to serving others, continuing Bella’s legacy through care and support for children with cancer.

On Feb. 8, the Live Like Bella Foundation will be hosting the Live Like Bella Superhero 5K at Tropical Park. The race commemorates and honors children battling cancer as the real superheroes. All funds raised through the Superhero 5K support the foundation’s work.

“Live Like Bella inspires us to serve others and stand with children and families fighting pediatric cancer,” Blanco said. “I invite our entire school district community to honor these young superheroes and support the foundation’s mission to provide compassionate care and fund lifesaving research.”
