On October 12, 2023, Calusa Elementary School students, teachers, and staff joined School Board Member Mary Blanco in welcoming Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez during a visit to celebrate and recognize one of their own, second grade student Sophia Gomez DaSilva for being named a finalist in the 2023 Florida Space Art Contest.

This is the second year of the Art Contest, and students throughout the state were encouraged to create an art piece inspired by the theme Time Travel to 2123: Florida’s Future as Space Capital. Sophia participated alongside more than 1,500 students in the state and was chosen as one of the 12 finalists.

“As a School Board Member and as a member of the extended Calusa community, it was a great honor and joy for me to have welcomed Lieutenant Governor Nuñez in our school and joined her in recognizing the talent of our students,” said Board Member Blanco. “Sophia’s artistic talent is remarkable. There were many students throughout the state competing with beautiful art pieces and hers was chosen as one of the top. Sophia definitely is a star, and her talent is out of this world!”

All finalists received tickets to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and the opportunity to participate on a future project with this year’s featured artist Romero Britto.
