In an attempt to reach the Million Trees Miami goal of one million trees planted by 2020 and a 30 percent tree canopy, Miami-Dade County has announced the Street Trees Matching Grant program, now in its second year.
Funded by Miami-Dade County, this grant engages municipalities, non-profits and community organizations in planting native or Florida-friendly trees on the county’s corridors and gateways.
“We are proud to be able to offer a boost in Miami-Dade’s tree canopy through partnerships,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.
“By teaming up with communities and non-profits, we can help green our community and create valuable shade on our streets.”
“This is our second year providing matching funds for street trees,” said Miami-Dade District 9 Commissioner Dennis C. Moss, Neat Streets Miami chair. “We encourage all interested communities and organizations to take advantage of this tool to double your impact and double the number of trees planted. Think of it as a two for one deal.”
The goal of this program is to leverage the county’s street tree program by encouraging investments on county or local streets.
Grants of $5,000 to $25,000 will be awarded to those communities who can demonstrate the greatest benefits for residents, employers and visitors and are able to provide a stewardship plan for our joint investment.
Eligible candidates include municipalities, non-profits, and community organizations. Preference will be given to areas with low-to-moderate income populations and/or with 20 percent or less tree canopy. The county is accepting grant applications through 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.
