We began this new school year proudly marking the 140th anniversary of the founding of Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
But history is more than a collection of years — it is a living thread that connects who we were, who we are, and who we dare to become. It is shaped by the students we inspire, the families we support, and the communities we uplift.
Since 1885, we have been the heart of education in this community, and while tomorrow keeps changing, our promise to students and families remains steadfast. We continue to adapt, expand, and make room for what comes next — always striving to meet the moment and unlock the potential in every learner.
Climbing together: A district united in progress
In education, there is no finish line. Our journey is defined by continuous growth, shared purpose, and collective resilience. We climb together — as one team, with one mission. The phrase “We Equals One” continues to resonate across our district, reminding us that our greatest impact comes from unity.
This year, our climb is measurable. Our graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 95.2 percent. State assessment results show significant gains in proficiency across all 21 tested areas and among all student subgroups. We are proud to be an A-rated district — or as we like to say, “A to the sixth power.” The percentage of A-rated schools in our community has risen from 53 percent to 64 percent. These milestones reflect our commitment to excellence and our refusal to settle.
Everyday champions: Stories that inspire
Behind every achievement are champions who rise to meet the moment. This year, I received a heartfelt email from Ms. Bonnee Binker, a grandmother searching for the right school for her granddaughter, Delaney. Delaney, who is on the autism spectrum, found a sense of belonging at Paul Bell Middle School — a moment marked by an unexpected hug that symbolized trust and connection. It was made possible by compassionate leadership and staff empowered to collaborate with families.
Another story of courage came from Blue Lakes Elementary, where School Resource Officer Carlos Angulo saved the life of cafeteria manager Janice Bayuelo by administering CPR during a cardiac emergency. His quick action earned him the Officer of the Month Award from the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police — the first ever for a School Police officer.
These stories are not exceptions; they are reflections of the everyday heroism that defines our schools.
Empowering educators, expanding opportunity
At the heart of our mission is academic proficiency, and at the heart of that mission are our teachers. This year, we launched MiamiLovesTeachers.org, a new platform offering free resources and celebrating one bold idea: Miami is the best place to be a teacher.
As our community evolves, so must our schools. We are embracing industry-connected learning, aligning academic offerings with Miami’s leading sectors — healthcare, aviation, technology, logistics, and finance. Education must extend beyond the classroom, forming an ecosystem where industry leaders, philanthropists, and government entities are not just partners, but co-educators.
With a legacy of excellence, a culture of innovation, and a deep commitment to equity and opportunity, Miami-Dade County Public Schools is your best choice — for students, families, and educators alike. We are building a future where every learner is empowered to thrive.
Championing the unseen: Believing in every learner
During a visit to Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, I witnessed Blind Soccer — a sport where visually impaired and sighted players compete together, guided not by sight but by sound, intuition, and belief. It reminded me of what educators do every day: they champion the unseen.
Educators see potential before students see it in themselves. They recognize leaders in children who haven’t yet found their voice. They are invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, and unshakable in their belief in human potential.
For 140 years, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has championed the unseen. That tradition continues with all of us. As we begin this new school year, let us ignite the light in every student — and let it shine.
