ChamberSOUTH, South Dade’s preeminent Chamber of Commerce, has begun a comprehensive search for a dynamic and visionary leader to assume the role of executive director after the announcement that Melissa Cancio, current executive director, will be relocating to Illinois later this year.
As the heart of South Miami-Dade’s business community, the chamber is seeking an individual with proven leadership skills, strategic thinking, and a passion for fostering economic growth and community development.
Cancio joined ChamberSOUTH as executive director in October 2023 and has been busy implementing successful special events, including monthly networking luncheons with engaging panelists and a sold-out Business Excellence Awards in May. She also has been instrumental in securing sponsorships for chamber events, working closely with the board of directors on developing chamber goals, and engaging with members to ensure they receive full chamber benefits.
Cancio is relocating back to Illinois, a state she is familiar with after completing her master’s in business administration from North Central College in Naperville, IL, about an hour away from Chicago. She is excited for this new chapter. Cancio will help navigate the transition to new leadership through the fall of this year.
“We are excited for Melissa as she enters this new phase in her career,” said Juan J. Hidalgo, CPA and board chair for ChamberSOUTH. “Melissa has been instrumental in leading the organization within the last year as we continued to serve our local community and members.
“She has worked diligently on developing our membership goals while navigating the needs of our members, board of directors, and community. We will miss her but know she will succeed in her new adventure, and we thank her for her service,” Hidalgo added.
