Cheetah Recovering From Leg Fracture

In a situation analogous to a child sustaining an injury while running in the playground, Zoo Miami’s juvenile male cheetah, “Winston,” recently suffered a fracture of the rear left leg while apparently running in his habitat.  Though no one saw the injury occur, because of the appearance and location of the fracture, it is assumed that Winston was running through his habitat when he suffered a trauma to his leg that led to the break. Zoo staff observed the injury upon arrival at work on the morning of Saturday, July 27th and Winston was immediately transported to the zoo’s animal hospital for radiographs to determine its severity.  The leg was immobilized and cast until surgery could be done to repair the fracture on Wednesday, July 31st.

Working closely with Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Rodney Schnellbacher and the Animal Health team, Board Certified veterinary surgeons, Dr. Natalia Andrade and Dr. Robin Holtsinger from Miami Veterinary Specialists, performed the surgery that included the attachment of two metal plates to repair and stabilize the fracture.  The surgery was successful, and Winston has since been recovering in a secluded area with a full leg cast.

Yesterday, Winston was immobilized, and the cast removed so that the Animal Health team could closely evaluate the surgical site and ensure that healing was progressing normally. Initial indications are that the fracture is healing well, and the staff will continue to closely monitor it for the next several weeks with regular exams until it is deemed to be fully healed.  Another cast was made, and Winston was returned to his recovery enclosure.  It is estimated that the entire healing process will take another 6-8 weeks.
