Christopher Columbus High School’s award-winning student run television station, CCNN Live, will host the first annual Media Excellence Awards to recognize the best of South Florida broadcast journalism on Saturday, Apr. 12, 7 p.m., at Cafe Columbus.
The Media Excellence Awards will honor local television personalities in the following categories: Best On-Air Personality; Best Field Reporter; Best Sports Reporter; Best Entertainment Reporter; Best Weather Personality; Best Use of Social Media, and Best Local News Station.
The CCNN Live staff will present the nominees in January, via webcast. The student body of Christopher Columbus High School then will vote on the winners, using Google Forums.
Vivian Gonzalez, WSVN meteorologist, will host the event which also will help celebrate the station’s 20th anniversary.CCNN Live will recognize Salvatore Cannella, founder of CCNN, with a lifetime achievement award that night.
CCNN Live, part of the national Student Television Network, which represents hundreds of student-run stations across the United States, is one of the most highly acclaimed student television stations in the state and in the country.
Having won more than 30 awards in their years of broadcasting, CCNN Live members wish to acknowledge and reward local journalists who have inspired them to produce and air quality programming. Students from nearby schools, Columbus families and the local community are invited to attend.
CCNN Live produces a daily 20-minute newscast and broadcasts live coverage of sporting events, including the paid production of major local sporting events for the National Federation of State High School Athletic Association (NFHS). Recently, CCNN Live took first place awards in district and state competition and placed third nationally.
