City of Miami Beach Seeks Filmmakers for their ‘Miami Beach Made’ Campaign

Miami Beach is turning the spotlight on filmmakers by offering them the opportunity to be a part of the city’s new film attraction campaign, ‘Miami Beach Made.’ Rather than spending marketing funds to convince filmmakers on why they should come to Miami Beach, the city is turning over a portion of their budget to creatives — encouraging them to tell their stories using Miami Beach as their backdrop.

“We’re excited to invite aspiring filmmakers to showcase our vibrant and diverse community in its entirety — recognizing that our more than 7 miles of beaches have traditionally received the most attention from Hollywood,” said Miami Beach City Manager Eric T. Carpenter.

With no shortage of picturesque locations like Española Way, Lincoln Road, the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, Normandy Fountain, Ocean Drive and South Pointe Park, the city offers an array of visually captivating settings for cinematic storytelling.

In partnership with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) and its agency of record VML, up to three filmmakers will be chosen for Miami Beach Made and receive between $5,000 and $25,000 to create an original work that will be filmed entirely in Miami Beach and used as part of the city’s campaign.

The city will promote the competition at the upcoming National Association of Television Program Executives Summit on Feb. 5-7 as well as on social media and out-of-home advertisements. Filmmakers are free to create any type of story they wish with the exception of content that is explicitly violent, sexually suggestive or discriminatory in nature.

The competition is open to U.S. residents (18 and older) except employees of the City of Miami Beach and the GMCVB as well as their family members. The judging decision will take place on March 3 with a project completion date of April 30 for the chosen filmmakers. Entries must be submitted electronically by February 17 with the following elements:

  1. Project synopsis: A concise and compelling summary of the film’s plot, themes and characters (maximum 500 words).
  2. Storyboard/visual treatment: A visual representation of key scenes, showcasing the planned use of Miami Beach locations and the overall aesthetic of the film.
  3. Locations: Where each scene will be shot.
  4. Production schedule: A detailed timeline outlining all phases of production from preproduction to postproduction demonstrating the feasibility of completing the project within the specified time frame.
  5. Budget: A comprehensive budget outlining all anticipated expenses, including preproduction, production, postproduction and contingencies. This section must indicate how the funds will be spent.
  6. Team bios: Brief biographies of key creative personnel, including the director, producer, writer and cinematographer highlighting experience and qualifications.
  7. Letters of support (optional): Letters of support from industry professionals, community organizations or other relevant parties.
