Solar United Neighbors (SUN) opened the Miami-Dade 2025 Solar Co-op, a free group that helps residents go solar together and save money.

The co-op also includes a new income-based assistance program, offering no-cost solar installations to a limited number of income-qualified homeowners. The co-op is open to new members until Sept. 15.

“Our goal is to make solar accessible for all members of our community,” said Laura Tellez, associate Florida program director for Solar United Neighbors. “Through the co-op, our solar experts help guide you through the sometimes overwhelming process of going solar.

For some income-qualified homeowners, it could mean no cost for a 5kW system.”

Solar energy is a safe, reliable and affordable way to reduce electricity bills, while investing in a home’s value. A recent study by Catalyst Miami and Miami-Dade County found that low-income residents are facing high indoor heat and energy burden compounding to increase negative health and wellbeing impacts. Solar energy is a solution to alleviate the intense energy burden of Miami-Dade’s most vulnerable populations.

Income-qualified homeowners in Miami-Dade may receive a free solar installation, saving tens of thousands of dollars in electricity bills over the next 25 years.

“My experience with Solar United was very good. The staff was and still is helpful, polite and professional,” said Zebelyn Christian, Miami-Dade solar co-op grant recipient.

“I have been very interested in going solar since watching HGTV’s Rock the Block, with a solar system on the winning home,” said Orlando Martinez, Miami-Dade Solar Co-op grant recipient. “It is an additional long-term investment that adds value to property.”

The Miami-Dade 2024-25 Solar Co-op helped 44 families go solar at no cost and is still open to new members. Solar United Neighbors is dedicated to consumer protection, education and assisting residents in accessing solar energy.
