Miami-Dade School Board vice chair Monica Colucci, District 8, partnered with Miami-Dade County Commission chair Anthony Rodriguez, District 10, on Monday, Aug. 11, to host a Back-to-School Backpack Distribution at Village Green Elementary School in west Miami-Dade.
The afternoon event brought together students, families, and community partners to start the 2025–26 school year with energy, excitement, and the tools for success.
Colucci and Rodriguez greeted families and distributed 200 backpacks filled with essential school supplies, ensuring every Village Green student was prepared for the first day of class. Everyone enjoyed complementary food, a variety of activities, and entertainment.
“This event is about more than just giving out supplies; it’s about showing our students and families that we are here to support them from day one,” Colucci said. “When our schools, community leaders, and partners work together, our children benefit in every way.”
The celebration was enhanced by the participation of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, assisting students with library card registrations; the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Midwest District Station; Miami- Dade Fire Rescue, which brought a fire truck for students to explore, and the Miami Marlins’ mascot, Billy the Marlin, who added extra fun to the day.
The collaboration between the School Board of Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Commission is an example of how partnerships can directly impact students’ success while strengthening the bonds between schools and their communities.
