Fred Foyo, an educator and coach for nearly 40 years at Christopher Columbus High School, was inducted posthumously into the school’s Hall of Fame on Nov. 30, 2022.
While attending Columbus High School, Foyo was a member of the football, baseball and track and field teams. After his high school graduation, he accepted a full football scholarship to Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, where he achieved All-Conference status during his junior and senior seasons, serving as team captain for the Raiders.
Foyo then spent the next two years coaching, and he was instantly bit by the bug that would set the course for the rest of his life. In the fall of 1982, after earning a degree in mathematics, he was hired by Br. Edmund Sheehan to teach and coach at Columbus and he hit the ground running.
Foyo coached in the 1982 Football State Championship Game, the first of four championship games in which he would coach. He eventually went on to coach more football games than anyone in the school’s illustrious history, culminating his career with the epic 2019 state title victory. Foyo also was the longest-serving track and field coach at Columbus and by far the most successful, winning state championships in 2018 and 2019.
Foyo loved his family more than anything. He and his wife, Maria, a longtime CCHS math teacher and Hall of Famer, had five children between them — Stephen, Eric, Fernando (all Columbus graduates,) Kristina and Joey. Sadly, Fred passed away on Apr. 17, 2021, but his legacy will live forever at Christopher Columbus High School.
The Fred Foyo Memorial Scholarship Fund which was organized by Albert Barthelemy (Class of 1991) and John Lynskey (’78) has received enormous support from fellow alumni and current school administrators.
This Memorial Scholarship Fund is meant to provide an incoming freshman who would normally not have the financial resources to attend Christopher Columbus High School with the opportunity to attend the school with all of its expenses covered for all four years. This young man will be given the ability to take advantage of all that Columbus has to offer and in turn, it will launch an academically prepared young adult of solid character into society, so that he may one day pass it forward.
If you wish to donate to the fund, visit the Columbus website at columbushs.com and click under the Support CCHS tab “Fred Foyo Scholarship Fund.”
