Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava formally launched her bid for re-election campaign on Saturday, May 13, with a kickoff rally at Ludovici Park’s Amphitheater on Old Cutler Road in Palmetto Bay.
Levine Cava, her staff and campaign workers were joined by scores of volunteers as well as officials of Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay, Pinecrest and other cities within District 8 for the rally. Representatives of police and firefighter organizations also were on hand to show support.
“Team DLC” T-shirts and other campaign gear for the 2018 election were given out, and bottles of water and mosquito spray were provided to volunteers for the door-to-door trek.
Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn introduced Commissioner Levine Cava to the crowd, lauding her efforts for the environment and improved infrastructure. Levine Cava took the microphone and explained her happiness with the rally site and her enthusiasm for the work ahead.
“I wanted to launch here where I live,” Levine Cava said. “Election time just fills me up with energy.”
Levine Cava began by thanking those present who had helped, including her mother, her husband, her staff, Palmetto Bay council members, Pinecrest Councilmember Anna Hochkammer and former Mayor Cindy Lerner, Miami-Dade County School Board member Lubby Navarro and others.
Levine Cava explained why she calls herself a “water warrior.”
“I am a born again environmentalist,” she said, adding that she had many reasons for her initial run for office in 2014.
“I had one goal from the beginning, which was to do everything I could possibly do for this community and restore trust in our government.
So that’s what we’ve been doing for the last two and a half years and we’re just going to keep on keeping it on, with your help,” she said.
“This was a people-powered campaign, and that’s what we’re going to do again. It’s not just about what we did, it’s about our economy. We need to protect our water, we need to fight against climate change and sea level rise. We have made some small but critical steps toward government accountability. I am very excited to continue on this journey for public service.”
