René García was born and raised in Hialeah. In 1997, at the age of 24, García was elected to a two-year term on the Hialeah City Council and was re-elected to a four-year term in 1999. He graduated with a bachelor’s in political science from FIU and received a master’s in business administration UM.

Presently running for Florida Senate District 37, Garcia launched his state legislative career in the Florida House of Representatives where he was first elected in 2000 – and again in 2002, 2004, and 2006. He served in several leadership roles including Deputy Whip.

García was elected to Florida’s State Senate in 2010. He is currently the Chairman of the Healthcare Regulation Committee. He also has participated on several non-profit boards including as Vice President of Kiwanis Club of Flamingo-Hialeah, a founding member of Children’s Trust, and Camillus House.

He received the Miami Dade County League of Cities Legislator of the Year Award, Florida Children Services Council Legislative Award, Jewish Center of Services Community Leadership Award, and Dade Christian Coalition Friend of the Family Award.
