The Miami-Dade County Asian-American Advisory Board (AAAB) began Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month on Friday, May 2, in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center.
The event, organized by the AAAB Executive Board and the AANHPI Heritage Month Committee, featured live performances showcasing the contributions of these communities in arts, sciences, government, military, commerce, and education. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava delivered the opening remarks.
AAAB first cice chair Luna Adachi and North Miami Beach Commissioner Lynn Su — who made history as the first Asian American elected official in the city — delivered the keynote address. County Commissioner Eileen Higgins and AAAB chair Tai Vaz provided closing remarks.
This year’s theme, “A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience,” was emphasized throughout the celebration. The program also featured a series of cultural demonstrations, including a Chinese Lion Dance by the Lee Koon Hung Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu Association, Korean taekwondo by World Class Martial Arts Miami, a Bharatanatyam and Kollywood Dance, and a Turkish Folk Dance performance, along with classical Thai and Chinese fan dance.

AANHPI Heritage Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage and ongoing contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. The observance began in 1978 when Congress designated the week starting May 4 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1992, May was permanently designated as AANHPI Heritage Month. The month commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, which was significantly aided by Chinese immigrants.
Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have made vital contributions to the nation’s economic, cultural, and political landscape, and their traditions continue to enrich our community.
The public is invited to attend the monthly meetings of the AAAB, typically held on the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Stephen P. Clark Center.
